Yes I used a 10% coupon for my xps, but it depends where you are in this wonderful world of ours!

Reply 2 : Dell XPS Coupons?

I'm in the US.

So what do the coupons go for? 10-20-30%?

Hmm.....wonder if it's worth waiting for.

Reply 3 : Dell XPS Coupons?

30% coupon on a new XPS? lolno

US coupons are around $100 - might be hard to find one now since Mar. 24 was the last day for one, and Dell just had a sweet weekend sale that ended last sunday (I saved over $500).

Just google around and you'll find whatevers out there; check the dell website occasionally for some deals if they pop up

T61p Major Problem -- HELP!!!

Three straight years without a problem and now suddenly my laptop turns on but 1) has no display (no LCD backlight either) 2) shows no hard disk activity at all. 4) Keyboard does not respond either (Caps/num/scroll lock indicators show no response) 3) There are no beeps.

How it occurred:

I was updating my nvidia driver and the laptop rebooted to complete installation, it was then that the problem manifested itself.

What I have tried doing:

1) I have tried using an external display to no avail.

2) I have disconnected all cables, external accessories

3) I removed the RAM and turned the laptop on which did not solve the problem and provided me with a series of beeps as well.

4) I tried inserting the two RAM sticks one by one to ensure faulty RAM was not the issue -- it still did not solve the problem

I am now completely disheartened... I am currently jobless so I cannot afford to buy another laptop at this time, neither can I afford to buy any sort of warranty. If any one has any inkling as to a solution for this particular issue please do advise! Any help at all would be much appreciated!

Reply 1 : T61p Major Problem -- HELP!!!

Don't worry, I don't think your computer is broken. The reason your computer was beeping, was because the ram was removed, I think. Please don't touch the hardware any more, place the ram back. If you can find a windows 7 install or Linux cd (can be downloaded google linux live cd ) please try to boot from it, change the bios to boot from the cd if it's not already set. If it the CD boots be certain it's not a hardware issue.

Please post back with results.

Reply 2 : T61p Major Problem -- HELP!!!

Hi graycolor, Thank you for your reply. The problem persists even with the RAM in place. All I get is a blank screen with no back light. The computer turns on with the screen blank but there is no hard disk activity. I therefore cannot access the BIOS. I have tried booting it up from a WIN7 CD but nothing happens. I do not think the keypad is working either.

Reply 3 : T61p Major Problem -- HELP!!!

I must have missed the no backlit part. That definitely sounds like hardware issue. Did this occur right after the update, can you clarify exactly when this issue arose. Or did you update, and a few days later the problem occurs.

Reply 4 : T61p Major Problem -- HELP!!!

Yes, it occurred immediately after the nvidia update when the computer restarted to complete installation. So do you think my GPU (and consequently my motherboard) is fried?

Reply 5 : T61p Major Problem -- HELP!!!

That seems like a pretty good bet. There's no way to fix it like the T4x machines. The fix is to replace the board. Probably your cheapest option would be to buy a board on eBay and replace it yourself. I would suggest getting one with an Intel GPU.

D830 Owner's Lounge

Okay, let's get a home thread up for all of us with the new Santa Rosa Latitude D830's.

Let's start with what configurations you got, initial impressions from the first few days of use, and so on.

Reply 1 : D830 Owner's Lounge

Okay, I ordered the following configuration:

Dell Latitude D830

C2D 2.2/800

2GB DDR2 667MHz RAM

15.4 WUXGA

nVidia Quadro NVS140m (256MB)

120GB 5400rpm

------------------------------------

First questions:

1. Why would Dell ship a unit with such poor graphics drivers? My initial WEI was 3.2 (because of the gaming graphics) and my 3DMark06 score was under 1000. Not to mention the frequent driver crashes, causing the blackouts and screen resets. I've since updated the drivers from Dell's support page, and will post my new scores to 3DMark06 and PCMark05 within the week.

2. Are any of you having problems with DVD playback in either Media Player or Media Center? I tried a few region-free DVD-videos and it refused to play past the opening FBI warnings. However, when I popped in my original R1 Almost Famous (Director's But Bootleg Edition) and a few others, they worked, but with a quite few stutters. In other words, the video playback - and, actually, the entire Media Center experience - was choppy and un-entertaining.

3. Speakers. Is it just me, or are the volume levels in these speakers ridiculously low? For some Windows alerts, it's fine - at least the error messages don't get loud enough to be annoying. But, again, I tried the DVD-videos and the audio is so low, it's all but incomprehensible. I had to hook up external speakers to get a decent experience out of it.

4. Also, how is your overall system performance? I was disappointed with the speed (or lack thereof) but attributed it overall to Vista and immature drivers. Then I remembered a ZDNet blog post by Ed Bott and his experience with Vista on the stock Dell C521 was incredible.

Quote:

The configuration I bought included a dual-core Athlon 64 X2 4000+ (2.1 GHz), onboard 10/100 Ethernet, a 256MB ATI Radeon Pro X1300 video card, 1GB of RAM, 160GB SATA hard drive, and a dual-layer DVD-RW drive. Keyboard and mouse and fax modem, no monitor or speakers or floppy disk. Windows Vista Home Premium is preinstalled.

Why aren't I seeing the same performance in my Latitude?

Any other comments?

Reply 2 : D830 Owner's Lounge

Just ordered mine, got a university deal which I couldn't refuse, allready sold my good old e1505.

-T7500 2,2Ghz proc

-2 gig ram

-NVS140

-Bluetooth

-WUXGA screen

-D-bay battery to replace the standard DVD and a 9 cell battery

-D-dock

-120gig 7200 rpm HD

-3 years of on-site waranty, accidental cover and theft cover

-And vista basic which i'll probably replace with XP and a 5 button mouse

Paid 1450 euro's for this, which is about 1997 dollars at current exchange rates..., sold my e1505 allready for 500 euros. Ahhh, HD screen and 10 hours of battery life, I await you!

Reply 3 : D830 Owner's Lounge

Do you know if the NVS140 250mb on die or is it 128 turbocached to 256?

Reply 4 : D830 Owner's Lounge

Ordered July 1st, received it July 9th.

- T7300 2.0Ghz

- 2GB RAM

- NVS140

- WUXGA

- 9 Cell Primary

- 6 Cell Auxilary

- 80GB 7200RPM HDD

- Complete Care

- 8x DVD/RW

- Vista Business

My first impression?

It's a beast! My m500 is quite tame compared to this thing. Kinda like with a nice car you can feel the power behind that keyboard.

I do have to agree the stock driver is poor. Vista would do these tiny lags under the default driver. Aero score was 3.2. 3DMark05 was 984. Upgrading to the ForceWare drivers raised the Aero and 3DMark05 scores to 3.4 and 3063, respectively, though I'm having some other minor issues probably due to the drivers.

Battery life was a bit over 3 hours with Dell's default power settings. I simply left the machine on with WMP playing some MP3's at a low volume. Not too bad I have to say, but I did expect a bit more, especially after reading some reviews for older D620/820's. I haven't tried to test the battery life with the media bay battery installed.

Sound is really amazing compared to the last two laptops I've owned. My ears start ringing before the sound quality goes up and I can pretty much hear the thing clearly throughout my house. It's really something.

Am going to be installing a fresh copy of XP today. Hopefully that'll get rid of my remaining display bugs. Will try to bench it again with stock and ForceWare drivers.

EDIT: In response to the above post, I'm pretty sure the NVS140 is turbocached to 256.

EDIT2: >>> Freefisheater: Concerning 1,2 and 4 it's probably because you're using Dell's stock drivers. Try the ForceWare drivers if you can. I just popped in a DVD and the playback in the default DVD player was fine. WMP hasn't given me any complaints either. Concerning the regionality issues you may just want to use a different player. Get MPC or something.

Reply 5 : D830 Owner's Lounge

If I remember right, it's 256MB on-board and the rest of the system RAM is available for Turbocaching.

Tiny lags? EXACTLY! Especially when using Flip3D. Or when using Dreamscene (it would get garbled or unexpectedly shut down), as I posted in another thread.

Is there a way to increase the volume through some third-party software? Maybe a hack to remove the decibel limits on the sound driver or speakers? I'm really disliking my weak audio here.

I'll try to follow your updated ForceWare drivers method from that other thread and see where that takes me. How is your issue with resuming from sleep going, though?

Finally, I saw your post over on another thread asking for a dedicated D830 thread... so here we are.

Reply 7 : D830 Owner's Lounge

Can you tell me more about keyboard, heat and noise?

Reply 8 : D830 Owner's Lounge

For those who don't want to click-through to Ed Bott's article, here's what he did and had to say about it:

Quote:

And then I try to stress the system out:

* I begin copying 5000 picture files (6.3 GB in total size) from a network server.

* I start up Windows Media Player and begin playing a new DVD, Bruce Springsteen’s Live in Dublin, maximizing the player and zooming the playback size to full screen within the window.

* I open Internet Explorer and begin visiting websites until I have five tabs loaded.

* I open Windows Mail and check for new messages, then switch back to Internet Explorer and open a few more windows.

* I start Windows Photo Gallery. Because this is the first time it’s run, it begins building its index and cache and I can see thumbnails and tags rapidly filling the Photo Gallery window.

* I open Windows Movie Maker, open the Import dialog box, and use the Windows Search box in the Open dialog box to find 425 pictures tagged “Telluride” and import them into a Windows Movie Maker project. Then I and tell Movie Maker to begin rendering the project in WMV format at 640 x 480 resolution. Movie Maker estimates that this will take 40 minutes or so.

* Finally, for good measure, I open Adobe Reader and tell it to download and install the latest updates. It begins installing the Reader 7.0.9 update in the background, interrupting me every few seconds with a dialog box.

Throughout all this, the DVD soundtrack has been playing back without a single audible glitch. Task Manager says I’m using roughly 840MB of RAM, about 81% of physical RAM installed. The CPU is at 100%, but there’s no noticeable delay when I switch to another program and begin using it. Every window snaps open instantly, with its full contents displayed. Even with the CPU at 100% and 65 processes running, Flip 3D works, with the DVD playing back in its own Flip 3D window floating above the desktop when it’s at the front of the stack.

So I throw a few more straws on this camel’s back, starting Windows Defender and ordering a full malware scan for all files on the system. Then I go back to Photo Gallery, search for the same group of photos I’m now rendering into a movie, and click the Slide Show button to begin displaying those 425 photos in full-screen mode with transitions. The DVD soundtrack keeps playing in the background, with just a brief skip as the slide show begins, I switch to the Sepia theme, watch and listen for a minute or so, and then exit the slide show and resume watching the DVD, which doesn’t skip a frame. I suppose I could open another 30 or 40 web pages and begin playing Mah Jongg, but this real-world stress test is enough for me.

Overall, it’s a very impressive performance. After a few minutes, I begin shutting down programs one by one and, after closing the last open window, check Task Manager again. CPU usage has dropped to 1% or less and it’s now using 460MB of RAM. Remember, I haven’t tweaked this system at all. Except for the larger hard drive (which has performances specs identical to those of the drive it replaced), this is an off-the-shelf $500 PC.

I was able to investigate a D830 because they allready have it at the university notebook service center. I did not have an impression that it specifically noisy or hot.

NC2400 black screen

Ok, I have a problem with my current NC2400 and I would like to fix it before selling.

The problem is consistent since I bought this laptop from a 2nd hand shop onehalf year ago. I use Windows XP Home with the latest (graphics) drivers installed.

Issue and workaround: Sometimes the LCD screen goes black without any reason, but the backlight remains on and the laptop works as well. If I put the laptop to suspend and resume, it recovers and works further.

The interesting thing is that I mainly use the laptop to play cartoons/movies on a projector/2nd display (extended desktop). In this case, the laptop's LCD works all the time. But, if I use the laptop screen to do anything (browsing, play a game), it is likely to go to black, especially, if I run GPU extensive application (e.g flash game).

My current assumption would be to replace the LCD inverter in the first place, but I do not know if it does make sense.

Any thoughts?

For what it's worth...I bought an intel 5100, and it didn't work..until I installed a modded BIOS. It was on slickdeals that I saw how to do it...if you want I can link you to the post.

However, I'm kinda thinking I might just upgrade to the Intel 6300. Apparently there are 3 antenna that can be used in the x120e.

Nope, it was verified not to be among the supported cards in the X120e: for some reason or another, Lenovo removed the Intel WiFi 5100 from the whitelist in the X120e BIOS.

There's already a bios with the whitelist check removed, if you google for "slickdeals x120e bios" (not sure if I can give a direct link to the post or not here...)

M70vm-X1 RAM - Is 8GB an option

When I bought my M70vm-X1 a few months ago, I thought I noticed that the motherboard could handle 2 4GB ram sticks for 8GB total ram (I'm running Windows Server 2008 as Workstation so don't bother pointing out I can't use the memory - I'm virtualizing a ton of stuff).

I can't seem to find the documentation that indicates whether this is possible or not.

The 4GB setup is 2 2GB DDR2 800 PC2-6400 sticks.

I'm trying to determine if my system will work with DDR3 memory or just DDR2 memory.

Also, will 2 4GB sticks work?

I'll be researching this all morning and will post updates as I find them for further reading. Any assistance is welcome!

Thanks!

Reply 1 : M70vm-X1 RAM - Is 8GB an option

From my understanding, the motherboard on the M50/M70 line supports a total of 4GB, meaning ASUS already maxed out the units' capabilities at the factory.

And no, DDR3 memory isn't compatible with the system.

Reply 2 : M70vm-X1 RAM - Is 8GB an option

DDR3 no. you motherboard is one with DDR2 there diffrent slot's I believe

8GB possible I don't know.

Reply 3 : M70vm-X1 RAM - Is 8GB an option

I think DDR2 4gbx2=8 is possible

I do not know whether OS can utilize all this memory

Reply 4 : M70vm-X1 RAM - Is 8GB an option

I know Windows Server 2008 Enterprise can handle up to 2TB (yes, TB) of memory (obviously I won't hit this limit anytime soon...). This is because it is designed to scale up for server farms.

Does anyone have any links to support claims (since we have contradictory claims of 4/8 GB support)?

Consensus is DDR3 won't fly. Any links to confirm?

More to come.

Oy... I'll never understand why DDR3 support is such a big deal to some of y'all. It's not like DDR2 provided a significant speed increase over DDR... just more bandwidth that hardly gets utilized. The only real gain was the modules' lower voltage requirements.

As for proof of incompatibility, the DDR3 modules have a different pin configuration and are keyed differently in comparision to DDR2.

Reply 7 : M70vm-X1 RAM - Is 8GB an option

All PM45 chipsets can support 8GB of DDR3 and DDR2 memory, but it is up to the manufacturer to enable that support. All current manufacturers only enable either DDR3 or DDR2, not both. Most allow 8GB but some restrict the amount in the BIOS. Spacecookie confirmed that his system does support 8GB, hopefully more people can further confirm via screenshot, etc.

How did you manage this? I have the same system, have already upgraded the HDD to 1 TB(2x500GB) 7200 RPM Seagates, but I thought 4GB was max for the RAM. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. I would love to have 8GB of usuable RAM.

Reply 9 : M70vm-X1 RAM - Is 8GB an option

YES IT IS! I took a chance and ordered a 4GB stick for my M70Vm and it recognized it! I have another 4GB stick on the way so I will soon have 8GB. Man the upgrade from 4GB to 6GB was pretty nice, things run a lot smoother, can't wait to see 8GB! I guess Asus said it was limited to 4GB max due to the 32 bit software they installed. Way to go Asus!

Naming Input Source on UN55D6000

I'm trying to figure out how to name or designate the different inputs on my new TV. When I hit the source/input button the menu pops up on the left side of the TV listing all on the active and inactive inputs, and to the left of each is a Series of dashes, except for my Samsung Bluray player which automatically changed to "BD Player" when I hooked it up.

I'ver been through the menu backwards and forwards more times that I can count trying to find where I can label the other inputs (ie Video Game, DVD, Cable ETC) and have had no luck. I've tried the Emanual, nothing there either. It's really starting to drive me crazy. My old Samsung DLP was easy to change, so there has to be a way right? Anyone have any advice?

I haven't done any bios updates and I have the model newegg was selling a year ago (1920 x 1280, 500g hard drive, 8 gigs of memory, ODD: dvd, etc.). Samsung TV won't turn on

We recently got a tv from our neighboor who complained that it wouldn't turn on. We got it, plugged it in, and it seemed to work fine. After about a day we noticed the mentioned problem. We thought it might be a bad power button so we got a new remote. That didn't work either. The problem was initially that the tv wouldn't turn on at the first try, it would take several, now it won't turn on at all remote or button. When we try the tv will make a power up noise on occasion and the power light will either flicker or stay lit in between attempts. On a side note we left it in the on position and tried shaking it a bit(stupid I know) and surprisingly it turned on for a second with sound and picture before turning off again. Any help would be great, I'm not afraid to get inside it and replace parts, I have some experience with electronics.
Its a Samsung Dyna Flat Pro

I'm not sure what the problem might be.

Though I would respectfully suggest that you have a qualified technician diagnose it.

Reply 2 : Samsung TV won't turn on

I have a Samsung 52" LCD 650 and it does not turn on right away and after 10 to 20 mins and a lot clicking on and off it does turn on and all is fine. This now happens everytime I try to turn it on. After doing some looking on the web it seems to be related to another issue which Samsung did do a fix for. There is a problem with the tv just turning off all by itself - called phantom Auto shut off - it is a firmware upgrade - this may fix the issue. I am going to try it and see what happens as I did have this problem as well.

Reply 3 : Samsung TV won't turn on

We actually had a very positive experience this week. Our 3 year old 42 inch flat screen LCD TV starting having issues and by Monday would not turn on. We heard a clicking sound. We researched the problem and after reading many comments it did not sound positive. I called Samsung Monday eve. and she said our model was not on the list for free repair but told me to call back the next day. I did and the person was very helpful and said they would repair it for free if it was the capacitor. If it wasn't we would have to pay. She connected me with a company in Lancaster, PA, Radio Active Repair. I received a call that day. The repairman came today, Thursday and replaced the swollen capacitors and the tV is working like new. All this occured in less than a week. Samsung did stand behind its product.

Reply 4 : Samsung TV won't turn on

Samsung really does stand by their products. Our 42 inch flat screen was working fine we swithed it off went out to dinner and when we came back it would not turn back on just a red light right next to the green on light. called samsung and they said it was a bad caoacitor and for a one time send out a repair free of charge. Samsung you rock!

Yeah, a few other people seem to have the problem and most of them have had it diagnosed as a bad high volatge transformer, bad fuse, or a bad starter box. I just don't know how to check if any of those are bad.

Go to Radio Shack buy up to 6 1000uF 35 V Capacitors and solder them on replacing the old ones that have probably bulged out. They are in the upper right hand corner of the main power board when you look at it. Google the problem. Many have had success doing this.

Reply 11 : Samsung TV won't turn on

I was able to get the capacitors from my local Radio Shack. I took the back of the tv, removed the main board. With a soldering iron removed the 4 bulged up 10v capacitors and replaced them with the 4 new 35v capacitors. The TV is working fine now. If I can do it, you anyone can do it

I have the same problem and since the tech wants $260 flat labor fee, I sure as heck will try to replace the caps. My model is LN52A650A1F. I have seen a couple of references to capacitor locations for different models from mine. Would mine be in the same location and the same sizes as I see in these posts.

I opened my lcd 52 and the caps were not bulging, but replaced them anyway with 25v from 10v. same issue with powering up. the normal clicking crap for 10-15 mins then powers up. I just dont want to buy a power board and that not be the issue. is there any way to diagnose the cause then replace said part. I want to avoid paying a tech to do something I can do myself, but dont want to spend 1k replacing parts I THINK may be defective. Help a brotha out...tks..

Now that you know about the BAD CAPS issue you can read all the posts about it.

Now it won't even turn on, manual or remote. This is obviously a wide spread problem with various Samsung models and screen sizes, I don't understand why they haven't been called out by the various well known Electronic(s) review and advice web sites. Samsung should be held accountable for continuing to allow such a inferior product to remain on the market without recalling them or at the very least acknowledging that there is a problem. In addition CNET and other sites need to publicize this issue and call attention to it until Samsung takes responsibility. I have tried to contact Samsung directly but have yet to receive a response.

I have samsung LCD LN4051D. I had the clicking issue and the TV would not turn on. I replaced the power board, still no luck. Can you pls help.

Reply 24 : Samsung TV won't turn on

I have a similar problem. The TV won't power up and simply clicks. Eventually, today, it powered on after I placed a space heater nearby as the room was unusually cold; before this it usually powered on after I removed main power (power cord).

Having seen a lot of similar stuff like this I am fairly certain what is happening is what is termed a "Pick and Hold" problem. Simply put there is a relay... somewhere... that must first "Pick" or in other words establish contact. Picking a relay requires a good voltage kick but not necessarily a steady current supply, hence the click. Without adequate juice to hold the relay long enough for the "Hold" circuit to establish the "Pick" process actually fails. Its a bit confusing since the "Pick" must still hold the relay long enough to switch that holding over to the hold circuit. To "Hold" the relay on requires a fair amount of current; normally a secondary circuit takes over once the pick is made and often times its contactors use the relay to establish the "Hold" path; once this establishes the pick circuit stops. Sorry for the technicalities, but it might help someone wrap their head around their issue.

So what does happen is a "Pick" ie clicking but no "Hold". Okay some one mentioned start capacitors which does make good sense if the circuit uses classic relay techniques to establish the hold as capacitors will supply enough juice for the initial pick to hold just long enough for the actual "Hold" circuit to take over. Probably a bulls eye solution, which I hope is not the case as my eyesight is not what it was and I am not in the mood to solder in any capacitors but thanks to walke30 for giving a bullseye for which ones to replace.

The other thing that could, I hope, be the problem is firmware. On the LNXX650 models there is a firmware patch available from Samsung that address an intermittent power on/off issue. I hope this is the issue here but I think probably not.....

I am guessing it could be the actual relay as well since dirty contactors cause similar problems.

Aside from those things it will certainly be something related to inadequate initial pick current. Hence the space heater which warms up the semiconductors in the power supply and causes more current in those semiconductors this warmer circuitry will carry more current than colder ones and hence when operating at the edge probably is just enough to make things work.

And of course all this would be much simplier if I only had a Schematic of the power circuits.........

I'll keep you posted if this fixes my issue.

Reply 25 : Samsung TV won't turn on

I have a LN52A650 with the same problems. However, my capacitors look fine (no bulging or leaking), but the relay is making a high pitched whine after the initial click. The relay is silent after any further clicks. Does this sound like a relay problem or is there no further whine because the capacitors have already discharged during the first click? If that latter is the case, would that indicate of problem with the capacitors?

Reply 26 : Samsung TV won't turn on

Had same problem with my Samsung LN46A650. Wouldn't turn on 18 months after I gave them $1900. That's about $105/month for a television.
Samsung didn't care, despite the fact that it's happening to a lot of people, so I joined this class-action lawsuit.

Hi Chimchim1959, did you ever find a solution? I'm experiencing a very similar problem and have also noted the temperature dependence.

In my case when the TV is cold (say <=17C) and you turn it on, it displays an image for a couple seconds and then goes black. Sound continues and shining a flashlight at the screen indicates that the image is still there - just no back light!

My current work around is to crank the room up to >20C at which temperature the TV starts up fine..!

A lot of people are suggesting that the problem is related to the "t-con board" which is available for ~$70-150US... Any thoughts?

Cheers.

r50p

So I've just purchased a 15" r50p as a secondary computer which I will leave in my office.

Are there any known issues with the model? Though I did look around the interweb quickly to find such information, I had no luck. For $79 I don't really care either way, but there's seems to be no talk about it anywhere; I don't know to take this as good or bad.

Here's a link to the actual machine:

Lenovo ThinkPad R50p 1832 Pentium M 1.7 GHz,1GB RAM, P4 - eBay (item 130497228709 end time Mar-14-11 20:58:08 PDT)

Just in case someone feels obligated to comment on the lack of an HDD, I do I have a spare 2.5 PATA/IDE drive around which should work with it.

Thanks,

Ryan

Reply 1 : r50p

A bargain, the R50p is one of the best Thinkpad laptop. There are some variants that were offered with the QXGA 15 inch flexview, which was the highest resolution ever used in a mass produced laptop.

Your R50p comes with the UXGA Flexview LCD, for 79 dollars you could not ask for anything more.

The R5x series laptop was fairly reliable there is no major hardware issues that i know of, as long the previous owner did not abuse it.

Reply 2 : r50p

Thanks for your comments. Certainly part of the reason I went for it was the resolution of the screen. I also was quite happy to see a keyboard without the Windows key or the "Menu" key or whatever it may be called (the key in between Alt and Ctrl on the right of the space bar). Is the keyboard really that huge or does it look wider because the chassis is only accomodating a 4:3 screen and thus isn't as a wide as its modern counterparts? I ask because the r50p has nearly the same amount of space on the sides of the keyboard as my T410.

That aside, barring from any unexpected issues with the laptop, it seems like it will serve me well.

Thanks,

Ryan

Reply 3 : r50p

The keyboard of the R50p is about the same size as that of the T410. It is a large machine since it is a R series with 15 inch LCD.

Reply 4 : r50p

So I received the laptop and threw in my spare drive, and everything works quite well. The keyboard feels nicer than that of my T410 and of course the screen is quite a bit nicer. The only issue I am having is that the GPU is running quite hot. With the fan off and under absolutely no load, it is running around 66C while the CPU is at 46C. Do the "ATI Mobility FireGL T2"s run fairly hot? This would not surprise me as a 128MB video card in a laptop from 2004 or so must use quite a bit of power. Does anyone think it would be worth it to change the thermal grease? I've got a tube of AS5 with ample amounts of grease left in it.

All in all, I'm quite happy. At the time I bought my T410 I thought I'd really need the power of the I7 Arrandale chip for my math. It turns out that I have ended up just passing off the heavy duty computations to desktops/servers and in general my work has not really included too many calculations as of late. Honestly the r50p is enough computer for me. The interfaces on it with which I interact (screen and keyboard) are more pleasant than those of my T410, as I mentioned. If I can get this thing to cool down I am considering selling my T410 and using the r50p as my primary machine. For $79 (well plus an extra $4 for the hdd caddy), as lead_org said, you cannot beat this machine. Well maybe you can, but I am still quite impressed with it.

Thanks,

Ryan

Reply 5 : r50p

That's an awesome deal for such a laptop, my T42p cost $300 when I bought it a few years ago on eBay.

You could also upgrade the screen to a QXGA 2048x1536 if you'd like the extra realstate and could deal with the increased pixel density and slightly lower brightness (you'd need two parts: 91P6837 for the cable and IAQX10N/IAQX10S for the display)

Reply 6 : r50p

The high heat output of the GPU is something you should expect with all the p model variants, these were workstation machines. But all in all it is a fantastic machine and with both a fantastic keyboard/screen to boot.

No laptops of those era even came close to the Thinkpads in terms of overall features and usability, this is what makes lot of people attract to this brand of laptop. This is also why people are still using laptops that are 6 to 8 years old, even though they have newer laptops.

Yep, that's why "Fire" is part of the name

Reply 8 : r50p

Ah yes it makes sense: they name the product after its worst quality!

Anyway, I for now have set thinkfan (a linux daemon which monitors the ibm thermal temperatures and sets the fan speed according to the temps) to basically ignore the GPU temp until it hits 72 (a somewhat arbitrary number which seemed like a still safe number which the GPU won't hit in normal use) and instead I have it mostly based on the CPU temperature, which is usually decent.

I still plan to change the thermal grease, I am just so lazy.

I should mention that in addition to a significantly better screen and a moderately better keyboard, the speakers on the r50p are much better than those on the T410. They're nearly three or four times louder with a better aesthetic to the sound (I am sure I could quantify this with some fourier analysis if I needed to!). It's quite an impressive machine. Even the battery still lasts around a couple hours! The previous owner took immaculate care of it, and the only physical flaws are some scratches on the top.

Thanks,

Ryan

About to buy an ASUS Eee PC 1215N-PU17, have some questions!

I finally decided to replace my Acer Aspire One 10.1 inch Netbook. Good little netbook but I want to be able to run Photoshop and some other programs with a little less load time.

I was looking at some of the different 10.1 inch Dual Core models on the market and then I stumbled upon the 12.1 inch ASUS Eee PC 1215N-PU17. I'm not sure that ASUS would have been my first choice but spec wise, it seems to be the only 12 inch model on the market running Dual Core Atoms AND the Ion. At least its the only one I could find. I know Toshiba is suppose to be releasing one but I don't know "when".

Anyway I find the 1.80Ghz Dual Core, the Invidia Ion and being able to run 4.0GB of ram very appealing so I'm pretty sure this the model I'm going to buy. The added screen size is a plus too. It's a little bigger then the 10.1 inch Netbooks but not so much bigger that it's too much of a pain in the butt or anything.

Anyway I have a couple general questions!

I see it includes 2.0GB of DDR3 right out of the box. Is this one or two sticks? I want to order enough ram to make it 4.0GB but I don't know if I need to order one stick or two.

Also does anyone know the speed of the ram included? I see they make a 1333 and a 1066. Not that it matters I guess, if I buy a stick of 1333, it would just default to 1066 if the included stick was 1066 right? That's if it already includes one 2.0GB stick and not two 1GB sticks anyway. From the specs though, it sounds like it comes with one 2.0GB stick though.

Moving on to the OS, I intend to run Windows 7 Ultimate X64 to utilize the full 4.0GB of ram because I'm already running 64-bit W7 on my home PC and all my programs and apps are already gears around a 64-bit system anyway. That said, I are there any certain drivers I need to be made aware of to keep all the features of this Netbook working like they should?

Battery... I want as much life as I can get as I'll be using this for collage. Are they any extended batteries available for this unit? If so what kind of life do they have? I hear the included battery runs about 6 hours, so says ASUS... What can I really expect out of it though?

Car chargers. Are they any?

ASUS products over all. I've ALWAYS bought ASUS brand motherboards my whole life. I've had GOOD luck with them, I've never had one die on me, I've always retired them for a newer model and I normally leave my desktops on 24/7 and get 5+ years of usage out of them. That said, this will be my FIRST ASUS purchase that is not just a motherboard, but a whole computer. How are there Eee PC Netbooks holding up over all?

Ummm, I think that about covers my main set of questions. Is there anything else I should know?

Thanks guys/gals!

Reply 1 : About to buy an ASUS Eee PC 1215N-PU17, have some questions!

Regarding ram, as far as i know even with 64bit os, only around 3.2 is visible due to chip limitations. pretty soon 1215b (update of 1215n) will be available, its a better machine, with amd brazos cpu. I saw video review of 1215b, and if i recall correctly 3.64 of ram was visible. I think you should go with 1215b.

Reply 2 : About to buy an ASUS Eee PC 1215N-PU17, have some questions!

Will the 1215 run the software effectively? Yes.

Would anyone want to use a 12" system as their main editing program for things like PS? Probably not, it's still a bit small for things like this (just like the 10" screens).

You can find compatible aftermarket car chargers on eBay. Asus doesn't make any directly.

I would suggest you seriously consider looking at Asus' line of 13" ultraportables instead - much better performance on PS etc, bigger screen with minimal increase in chassis size compared to 1215, better battery runtime, not greatly more expensive and still low weight.

Reply 3 : About to buy an ASUS Eee PC 1215N-PU17, have some questions!

Everything is good except the fact that ASUS produced them air-tight. In order to upgrade even the HDD, you need to tear apart the entire machine voiding the warranties.

I was planning to buy one too but after learning this fact I changed my mind. The very first thing that I do to a laptop is the HDD upgrade.

Y560 memory upgrade

Hello all

I recently purchased a Y560 with an I-5 and 4GB of PC 8500 Ram. I am going to upgrade it to 8GB while memory prices are low. My question is since this laptop had an optional I-7 quad available running at PC10666, would it be advisable to purchase the higher speed sticks. I am thinking that I may upgrade the CPU to the Quad somewhere down the road. I guess my biggest concern is whether the Gskill PC10600 will cause any conflicts with the I-5's 1066 bus speed.

Thanks in advance

Strange (and somewhat urgent) problem. Halp!

I use my VAIO SR190 in a docking station. Today, I performed a routine shutdown through Windows 7 (64 bit). I turned the laptop back on, and the backlight of the screen turned on, but no splash screen, and after 10 minutes there was still nothing on the screen (and nothing showed up on the external monitor either, leading me to believe Windows had not booted).

However, when I take the laptop off the dock, and just plug in the power adapter, everything works as usual. This has never happened before.

Any ideas?

Reply 1 : Strange (and somewhat urgent) problem. Halp!

Did you try and put the laptop back on the docking station and see if it boots up normally? Do you have any other devices connected to the docking station when this happened like a hard drive, USB thumb drive, etc? I have had a few rare occurrences of the operating system not booting up when such devices were connected, and I mean rare. Probably happened to me twice during my 20 years of owning computers

Reply 2 : Strange (and somewhat urgent) problem. Halp!

I tried unplugging everything from the dock, and re-seating the laptop on the docking station. It doesn't even go to the VAIO splash screen. Very frustrating

Reply 3 : Strange (and somewhat urgent) problem. Halp!

If you can source a fine (I mean VERY fine) paintbrush, try gently cleaning out the contacts on the dock and your SR (where it 'docks' with the dock). And I guess pray the issue is some dust...

VGN-Z users and VGN-Z docks (back when they were being sold) were quite notorious when certain dock functionality began failing after a year or so, most notably the ethernet port. The issue you mention above, I remember reading somewhere, was another symptom. This was due to the repeated docking / undocking wearing and eventually damaging the connection.

App or web to manage +50 dell notebooks (warranty)

Hi

Samsung PN50C8000 IR or burn-in issue

Bought this TV a few months ago. Did everything for the "break-in" period. I still keep the tv at 50% contrast.

I bought a plasma from Samsung because they boasted to be the best in 'burn-in protection' technology. I have all burn-in protection settings 'on'.

1st question: do they turn off at any time? Because although I have all settings to on, i am still getting IR on my tv. This happens most when I play video games.

Some IR from video games (like 'need for speed') have gone away after a few hours of normal tv watching.

If i have the burn-in protection settings 'on' why am i getting ANY IR? I thought the pixel shifting was supposed to stop from having static images on the tv?

2nd. I started playing Madden '11 and usually play from 3-4 hours at a time, 2-3 days a week - now, there is IR of the scoreboard on my tv - i thought it would go away within a few hours of watching tv like it normally does, but the ghosting IR image is still on my tv after over 15 hours of normal tv viewing.

I have also run the scrolling feature for over 2 hours and the IR has not gone away.

- Why am i getting IR if i have burn-in protection settings from a manufacturer that says they have 'the best' protection nowasdays?

- does that mean i have burn-in if my IR is not going away? Or, how long will it take for it to go away?

How long does a static image need to be on a tv to get permanent burn-in?

(also, i keep reading that Samsung tv's have a "whitewash" screen for burn-in, but that function is not on my tv - does it have it and i just can't find it, or does it just have scrolling?)

Thank you!

Reply 1 : Samsung PN50C8000 IR or burn-in issue

Arbylee,

The Burn-In Protection menu is designed to help slow or avoid image retention. There's no technology in place for any plasma panel to make it completely unavoidable. You noted that most of it goes away, so it's temporary. You'll want to view the manual and edit your watching (or gaming) habits appropriately so that you don't get burn-in.

- Why am i getting IR if i have burn-in protection settings from a manufacturer that says they have 'the best' protection nowasdays?

Pixel shift, Screen Wipe and other options on the TV do allow protection, but that doesn't mean the panel can be gamed on for hours at a stretch, or torch mode can be used without noticing any effect. Plasma is still a technology that has it's limits.

There is no "bleach" white setting - the Screen Wipe option is actually better, since it moves all of the pixels from the "dormant" state to the "excited" state for each pixel.

If you're doing a lot of gaming, or gaming where there are static images (such as the speedometer), try lowering some of the brightness and contrast options. Lots of gamers like the bright "torch mode" settings, but unfortunately, that's going to leave more image retention than lowering the settings.

I have no idea how long the image "must be there", since it depends on the settings, source material, and length factors. 5% is recommended in the manual for any non 16x9, or for any static image per week in terms of viewing time - as listed on Pg. 2 of the manual.

http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp60/samsung_hd_tech/pn5percent.jpg

While I can't speak on other manufacturers, no plasma that I'm aware of is immune. We put those protections in place because it can happen. Based on your "4 hours at a time, 2-3 days a week" gameplay description, your games are burning themselves in your panel with these lengths of use.

Reply 2 : Samsung PN50C8000 IR or burn-in issue

I experience the same issue with IR on my PN50C8000 set.

IR may be a normal limitation of plasma technology but I find the PN50C8000 to be abnormally sensitive to it. It takes mere seconds to create IR that will last several minutes even when using very low brightness and contrast (to the extent that it is difficult to watch TV in daylight). Funny that Samsung advertise high contrast ration and superior brightness to make this the bet 3D set on the market but at the same time you have to tune those halfway down to make sure not to damage your TV... Even making normal TV viewing difficult.

Every time you try to express your concerns, Samsung people will say the same thing:

1) "IR is normal with Plasma technology." True but this is not what we are saying. Every car will go out of gas eventually, this is a limitation of the tech, but if your car went out of gas after only one mile and then the dealer tells you "well drive under 30mph and il will last longer" would you still consider this a "normal" behavior? I have a Panasonic plasma set and I need several minutes (even hours) of watching static image before seeing IR.

2) "Do not use torch mode." Well I think it is clear from your post that you are not using torch mode. From my experience even 50% brightness and contrast will not protect your TV from IR from occurring in a few seconds (10-30s will last 5-10 min). At this point I think the TV set is barely functional for daylight use.

3) Any IR or burn-in problem is not covered by warranty. Even if it create IR in normal viewing conditions? Are you selling us a product that is not able to do what it should be doing?

Reply 3 : Samsung PN50C8000 IR or burn-in issue

Did you get a transaction number from your call to customer service? If so, post it here. I don't mind escalating these issues if you feel it's not normal operation.

Reply 4 : Samsung PN50C8000 IR or burn-in issue

I own the same tv and directly from the box, I experienced (with low contrast and brightness) retention issues, like you.

I called Samsung Prestige Service (which I think they offer for all countries). Told them about my problem. They said it might be a "bad panel" since this shouldn't be a problem even with hours of gaming. They said that retention should be very limited, so they offered my to come by my house a install a new panel.

After the panel swap I noticed much better picture quality and retention is no where to be seen. Watching CNN or any other news station with their solid bottom-bar in high contrast doesn't even provoke retention any more.

So get it replaced.

HD Tech - I do not have a transaction number since communication was done by email. I live in Canada so customer service policy may differ as you will see in their answer...

r46_Rudi - Getting my panel replaced is not that easy. Samsung is saying that IR is not covered by the waranty:

Samsung first reply (the usual stuff):
"Plasma TVs are most sensitive to image retention during the first few months of use, when it is advised to
use them at a lower brightness (this is mentionned in the manual).
Since image retention is not something covered by the warranty, such warranty would not cover the cost of a
technician inspecting the TV for image retention issues"

Samsung second and last reply (playing hardball):
"We cannot answer questions about what is normal or not, only about what the warranty covers or does not.
And image retention is not something that our warranty covers.

You can always dispute our answers by addressing our Office of the President, at oop.seca@samsung.com."

It can be argued that their answer is not legal (we have a special law for this in Quebec). A lot of fun in perspective...

Cf-W8 SATA II 1.5 Gb/s cap ?possible bios mod?

Hi there, I am a newbie on here with my first toughbook CF-W8. Top-notch QUALITY! Love the toughbook even though the w8 spec is little old compare to current market unit. However, after a few upgrade, RMA and SSD, it turn out to be much better then one would thought.

I am no computer expert by any means so I hope someone here can help me on the SATA question. The original HDDs are being swaped for SSD, and I cannot actually use it at full speed due to the SATA I is use for this machine.

I'm not sure if this is the same case as the thinkpad T61/X61 where Lenovo put cap on the SATA port and limit to 150Gb/s for longer battery life.

Is there possible to mod the bios to enable the SATA 3.0Gb/s like T61/x61? I copy below from ICH9's data sheet

"The ICH9 has two integrated SATA host controllers that support independent DMA

operation on up to six ports (desktop only) or four ports (mobile only) and supports

data transfer rates of up to The SATA controller contains two

modes of operation a legacy mode using I/O space, and an AHCI mode using memory

space. Software that uses legacy mode will not have AHCI capabilities."

Thank you for taking the time to read this post.

Reply 1 : Cf-W8 SATA II 1.5 Gb/s cap ?possible bios mod?

I have not seen any bios mod's,

Toughbooks are not as common as Acer's and others that have a larger interest base

The throughput cap will effect you with ssd's and the cf-19/74/30 are all sata-1 as far as I know

Blair has installed a Intel ssd in his cf-30

The throughput is limited to 117mb/s where the same ssd in my Thinkpad is 177mb/s

The positive: You still get double the performance over a 7200rpm hard drive

The negative: You are capped at sata-1 throughput

Samsung P2350 problems

Hi,

I have a Samsung P2350 monitor and it recently not functioning ! This is unfortunate and it happens about 2 months after the warranty expired ! I am extremely surprised that this quality monitor is already dead and my cheap BenQ monitor is still running since a couple of years now!

Anyway, the problem is that when I power on the monitor is lights up for 2 seconds and then nothing on the screen. If I grap a light and go close to the monitor I can see the LCD panel working but no lights !

Again, it comes back for 2 seconds after 20-30 seconds ... That's it! Nothing else !

I have tried a couple of things provided in some forums or troubleshooting section on the Samsung website but I didn't find anyone with the same problem.

Can someone help !?

Thanks

boudha_69,

I'm sorry to hear that you're having some troubleshooting problems with your monitor.

You might try registering your product on the Samsung.com support site. In some cases, if you are located in the US region, registering your product will get you an additional three months of warranty. Then, once your product is registered, call the Samsung customer service center at 800-SAMSUNG, mention that you registered your unit. They may attempt some troubleshooting, which is always good to try. If that still doesn't work, you may have the ability to ask that your unit be serviced.

Here's that link:

Thank you for the link. The problem is that I do not have the proof of purchase of this monitor ! I only have an email confirmation to my friend, for which I have bought the monitor and a credit card slip that only says where I bought it and the amount. That's it !

Hope there would be an easier way, I should have done registration when I had all the details handy ! It was purchased around January 14th 2010. This is the only thing I have and the serial number of the monitor !

It would be great to have this covered under warranty ... But I do not think it is possible. The only way left is to open it and see if something is apparent because I do not think it is worth it to repair a 200$ monitor ...

Let me know what you think.

Thank you

WHAT!!!Before wiping!! that's optional, yeah?! because i wiped!

Reply 3 : after wiped laptop

What do you mean by 'wiped by DVD'??

If you used a restore/recovery DVD to wipe it, that should either have returned you to the point at which the recovery DVDs were burnt, or maybe to the factory-fresh condition off the recovery partition on the hard drive.

That is, I'm assuming it wasn't just a DVD containing one file: format.exe ?

Otherwise, it sounds like you will need operating system installation media, in CD, DVD or USB stick format, to boot your computer off and follow the installation procedure.

Reply 4 : after wiped laptop

Did your notebook come with recovery DVDs? If not, you are probably dead in the water here. You need the disks to restore from.

'Dead in the water' is a trifle strong when you can just boot off a(ny) Windows install DVD/USB stick & do a clean install, don't you think?

It will take longer than an automated repair/recovery, but carries benefits of its own, & I'm still far from clear that that isn't what the OP was actually trying to accomplish in the first place.

I think Smart-Girl refers to the massive SSD confusion about TRIM and secure erase stuff.

In any case, just wipe your drive / delete partitions and reinstall from scratch/ use recovery disks and you are all set - new partitions will be created in the windows setup routine.

G73SW-XT1 Question

I was just wondering if anyone knows what's different between the A1 vs the XT1. Also does the XT1 come with the backpack and mouse?

Reply 1 : G73SW-XT1 Question

Looks like it just lacks the 2nd 500gb HDD/hybrid hdds and no, usually X models dont come with a backpack and mouse and from looking at TD, it doesnt say the XT1 comes with one, so most likely it wont.

Reply 2 : G73SW-XT1 Question

Probably 1 yr warranty only instead of the usual 2yr.

Does the LN40B750 support ARC?

Getting a new AVR that supports this just not sure if my TV will.
Thanks, Mike

Reply 1 : Does the LN40B750 support ARC?

mamontano,

None of the HDMI inputs support ARC (Audio Return Channel) on the LN40B750.

Reply 2 : Does the LN40B750 support ARC?

Didn't see any reference in manual. Like to ask another question. What is the ethernet speed? Didn't see any spec on that. Assuming it's 10/100. Not ready to upgrade tv at this point. I have not owned it that long. I also have a BD-P3600 and BDC5500. Can you tell me
what the ethernet speed is on those, as well? Sorry to hit you up with all these questions. Just trying to see if I should upgrade my router which is 10/100. Thanks for your quick responses.

Reply 3 : Does the LN40B750 support ARC?

mamontano,

I don't have the Ethernet speed available. I've asked prior, and still don't have a spec on that.

Reply 4 : Does the LN40B750 support ARC?

Thanks for checking. If you ever find out please let me know. Thanks, Mike

Reply 5 : Does the LN40B750 support ARC?

The main reason i'm checking some of these things is that i'm going to upgrade my non-hdmi receiver to a new one and they all have high speed hdmi 1.4a for 3D and ARC. I'm currently using high speed 1.3a, category 2 and didn't want to buy new ones if i didn't have to.

Is the Basic Alienware MX11 Good Enough?

We're talking about a difference of almost $700 here.

And no, before you even start, I don't care what you could assemble in your basement, what the parts cost at some bargain-bin online outlet, blah, blah, blah.

This question really ONLY concerns if it's even worth it to get the basic Alienware MX11, or if -- in order to get good gaming performance (which, let's face it, that's all this notebook is intended for) -- you have to go with the higher-end machine (at which point I could get a normal laptop for far less).

Specs on the off-the-shelf MX11:
Intel? CoreTM 2 Duo SU7300 (1.3GHz/800Mhz FSB/3MB cache)
2GB2 Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 800Mhz - 2 DIMMS
160GB3 SATA II hard drive (5400RPM)
NVIDIA GT335M GeForce?

Specs of the upgraded version:
Intel? Core? i7 640UM (4M Cache, 1.2 GHZ with 2.266 GHz (Max Turbo Frequency)
8GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 800MHz
160GB3 SATA II hard drive (5400RPM)
NVIDIA GT335M GeForce?

No, I didn't choose to upgrade the hard drive size (or turn it into a solid-state drive for that matter).

The major changes lift the price from $799 to right around $1500.

However, the simple fact of the matter is that this notebook was designed for gaming -- it's the intended purpose of even the low-end model. I would be playing MW2, World of Warcraft, Starcraft II, and perhaps a few other titles on here. For the forseeable future, I'm not really planning on using this for anything too graphically intense... but, who knows long term?

The point of all this is -- is the off-the-shelf MX11 even worth it? Can it do what needs to be done and make it look good, or do you really need to essentially double the price to make this puppy shine?

I know for gaming purists out there, only the best is really acceptable, but if I have to save up to buy the more expensive rig, it's going to take a long, long time.

Just curious to hear what your experiences are with this machine, etc.

Thank you.

Reply 1 : Is the Basic Alienware MX11 Good Enough?

On your gamer. If you have a gamer in your house, even the top end machines won't do. But that core2duo is not a bad choice.

HOWEVER!!! The i7 based machines so far do not have switchable graphics AND the machines run very warm to so hot you can't place them on your lap. Battery times are in minutes, not hours.

My suggestion is to pull back to the core i5 cpu and the model that has switchable graphics.

Reply 2 : Is the Basic Alienware MX11 Good Enough?

How much RAM do you think I need, Bob? The basic alotment is 2 gigs, which sounds too small to me, but it can be purchased in 4, 6 or 8. I'm almost thinking 8 is relatively unnecessary? What middle ground should I shoot for?

Reply 3 : Is the Basic Alienware MX11 Good Enough?

Get your usual 64 bit OS and it's very nice. As to the video ram, stick to the 1GB models.

You can always bump the ram later but many overbuy on ram.

Reply 4 : Is the Basic Alienware MX11 Good Enough?

my god dude the mx11, which i have been recently looking into buying, for its price, the only reason its ALOT cheaper than the rest is mainly SIZE. its 11.6 inches instead of much larger. but also parts, these parts....---

Intel? CoreTM 2 Duo SU7300 (1.3GHz/800Mhz FSB/3MB cache)
2GB2 Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 800Mhz - 2 DIMMS
160GB3 SATA II hard drive (5400RPM)
NVIDIA GT335M GeForce?....----

IS INSANE. it will run world of warcraft on high graphics without a hicup (maybe on loading). unless u have a ****** internet connection. but this little thing will do all you want
