Can someone explain what U30, U31, U33, U35, U36, U41, U43, U45, U53, UL20, UL30, UL50, UL80, UX30, and UX50 means?
This is getting ridiculous, and the asus website is really good at NOT explaining anything

I can't really see the differences between the U and UL serie. And then the UX serie?

The letters are representative of the product line. Like Chevy, Pontiac and GMC. The first number usually reflect a) the screen size - 3 = 13inch, 4 = 14inch, 5 = inch inch ... and the last number is the "generation".
You might as well ask GM why they release a car named an Aztek, or a Aveo, or a Vibe. You'll get answers, but they won't actually help you decide anything, because they're meaningless beyond the name.

On top of what DCx said, the number 8 also refers to 14 inchers. The reason behind this is because Asus did not like to use the number "4" as this is commonly associated with "death" in the Chinese culture.

Another nice and comparable laptop to the U36Jc is the new Samsung 9 Series if that's what the OP is looking for.

And a cheap alternative to both the u36 and the samsung (and I mean cheap, not inexpensive, though it is also inexpensive) is an acer timeline. Not one of the "bells and whistles" ones, but something with a lower end processor can usually be picked up at walmart, costco or bestbuy for ~400.
